Topic: "Chemical Energy Storage: Enabling Micro Biomedical
Devices to the Electrical Grid"

Speaker: Dr. Glenn G. Amatucci
Chemical energy storage in the form of batteries and
ultracapacitors enabler technologies ranging from the smallest
neural stimulators to the next generation of the US electrical
grid. This talk will give an overview of relevant energy storage
technologies and how application priorities dictate the
development of the next generation of electrode materials and
energy storage cells. Specific examples of research being
performed at the speaker's laboratories at Rutgers University
will also be discussed.
Glenn G. Amatucci received his Bachelor's ('92), and Doctoral
('95) degrees from Rutgers University. From 1991-2003 his
research was focused on the study of lithium based electroactive
materials and non-aqueous energy storage devices in
collaboration with or as an employee of Bellcore/Telcordia
Technologies' Energy Storage Research Group located in Red Bank,
New Jersey. Glenn was the Director of Energy Storage Research at
Telcordia from 1998-2003. He joined Rutgers University and is
currently a Research Professor within the Materials Science and
Engineering Department
Glenn has authored or co-authored over 70 refereed papers with
over 2000 citations, 2 book chapters, and has been granted 20
U.S. patents one of which resulting in an R&D Magazine top
100 technologies. His current research focus is on the enabling
of new energy storage and chemistries and devices through the
use of novel nanocomposite electroactive materials to address
the extremes of the power/energy spectrum. His ESRG laboratories
perform basic electroactive nanomaterial research to proof of
concept prototype device fabrication in a specialized laboratory
facility located at the Technology Center of New Jersey. Faculty
and staff within his group also have active programs in
thermoelectrics and photovoltaics

Incoming ACC&CE President Richard M. Goodman offers a
special invitation to non-members of ACC&CE to come to Ben's
Deli and attend the 81st Anniversary annual meeting of the
Association of Consulting Chemists & Chemical Engineers,
Inc. (ACC&CE).
First, Ben's Deli is a very special place and the cost for the
dinner is a real bargain. Second, with the downturn, many
chemical businesses are cutting back on their full-time
employees. It would serve many career chemists and chemical
engineers well to attend our meeting to find out how to become a
consultant. President Goodman will describe the nature of the
consulting business with the aid of our many successful members.

Speaker: Dr. John C. Bonacci, Fibonacci Inc.
Reflections from the owner-operator of a small consulting
practice over the past 20 years will be shared with members of
AIChE and the ACC&CE.
These experiences and comments evolve from work by Dr. Bonacci
for clients of his company Fibonacci Inc. They cover a 20 year
period from 1988 until early 2009. Any specific case histories
emanate from catalyst applications, air pollution control,
safety & accidents and some design work. The clients were
large Fortune 200 companies as well as smaller and start-up
companies.
BIO-- Dr. John C. Bonacci is a Ph.D. Chemical Engineer with
degrees from Clarkson University and U. of Pennsylvania. He is a
licensed professional engineer and US Patent Agent license. John
is a co-author on 101 global patents issued to Dupont, Mobil Oil
and Engelhard Corporation. He has published numerous refereed
articles in World-wide journals, spoken and chaired dozens of
seminars. He was elected a Fellow of the AIChE in 1984 and
received the Golden Knight award from Clarkson University in
2002.
He served on the AIChE National Education Committee, was a
member of the New Jersey Energy Institute and Chairman in
1984-85 and a Trustee of the World Environment Center. He is
currently a twice- elected Councilman in Berkeley Heights, New
Jersey.

Speaker: Paul L. Cousineau, Dow Jones & Company, Inc
Dow Jones manufactures the
Wall Street Journal and Barron's at 14 company owned and 8
contract printing plants. Print and procedural standards have
been developed and implemented over the past eight years to
achieve a consistent national result from this infrastructure.
Mr. Cousineau is Director of National Production for The Wall
Street Journal (Dow Jones) and has been in this role since
January 2006. He was recently appointed to the Graphic
Communications advisory board at California Polytechnic State
University in San Luis Obispo, is currently on the board of
directors for the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts
(TAGA), is chairperson of the recently formed Printing
Technology Committee (a select group of newspaper industry
leaders).
Mr. Cousineau has developed several unique technologies that
are currently employed in the daily production of the Wall
Street Journal and Barron's. He is recognized as one of the
leading production and printing experts in the newspaper
industry.

Topic: "IS EUEXIA A REALISTIC GOAL FOR OUR LIVES?"

Speaker: John Bullock, MS, Ph.D.
Euexia, as used by
Hippocrates and Aristotle, implies the attainment of an ideal
level of health. The term "optimal" is used to
describe the best level of performance and of physical and
biochemical status achievable by an individual based on his/her
genetic endowment, conditioning, and lifestyle.
Conventional medical education, research and practice are
primarily directed towards illness (dysfunction) rather than
health, with the emphasis on disease detection and treatment.
The emphasis is on disease detection and treatment. Individuals
with no detectable disease are seemingly of much lesser interest
to the health professions.
The purpose of this presentation is to emphasize the
fundamental science that underlies common disease processes and
how we ourselves can improve or prevent such pathologies from
becoming more serious medical problems. In short, you will learn
how to live your best life and explore your desire either for
quality or quantity of life as a personal goal. The information
presented will provide a fund of knowledge that will allow each
one of us to assume a greater responsibility for our health
status.

Topic: "Man in Space - Next Stop, Mars"

Speaker: Dr. Alfred U. Mac Rae
Space is often referred to
as the last frontier for exploration. It is an intriguing place
in our environment and the challenges of putting man in space
has inspired the imagination of scientists and writers for many
generations. The emphasis of this talk is to provide a
historical view of the technology used to venture into space,
practical applications of space technology and to describe some
of the issues that need to be addressed before putting a man on
Mars. We will conclude the talk with an open discussion with
audience participation on the subject of "Should we go to
Mars and what benefits do we expect to gain from such a venture?"
Upon obtaining his PhD in Physics from Syracuse University, Dr.
Alfred U. Mac Rae joined Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ where he
did basic research on solid state and surface physics in the
Fundamental Physics organization. He then switched to the
management of the development of advanced integrated circuit
fabrication technology and circuit design and finished up his
career in Bell Labs managing the design and introduction into
manufacturing of large communications transmission systems,
retiring as Director of Satellite Communications. Since then, he
has served as an international consultant in cellular and space
technology.
He has received many awards covering integrated circuit
technology and space. He is an elected member of the National
Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Physical
Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers. He has 18 patents, with one singled out by
the CEO of AT&T for its significant contribution to the
earnings of that company.

Route 22 East : (Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights, Fanwood, New
Providence Exit) - Make a right turn at the exit (under overpass)
and then go straight on Park Avenue for about 100 yards. Snuffy's
will be on the right. Route 22 West : (Scotch Plains, Berkeley
Heights, Fanwood, New Providence Exit) - At the exit, make a right
turn. At the traffic light, make a left turn and take the overpass
over Route 22. At the end of the overpass, make a right onto Park
Avenue. Snuffy's will be on the right.
Garden State Parkway : (North and South) - Take Exit 140 from the
Garden State Parkway and follow the signs for Route 22 West. Once on
Route 22 West, follow the directions above.
Route 78 : (East and West) - Take Exit 41 from Route 78. Follow the
signs to Scotch Plains. This will put you onto Plainfield Avenue.
Follow Plainfield Avenue straight through the traffic light, where
it becomes Bonnie Burn Road. Follow Bonnie Burn Road to the next
traffic light and make a right turn (sign Scotch Plains/Newark).
Follow the overpass over Route 22(traffic may back up here). At the
end of the overpass, make a right onto Park Avenue. Snuffy's will be
on the right.
New Jersey Turnpike : (North and South) - Take Exit 14 from the New
Jersey Turnpike and follow the signs to Route 78 West. Once on Route
78 West, follow the directions above. |
