  Education:
Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1972.
  Work Experience:
Larry Charbonneau formed Lakefront Consulting, Inc., in July 2005 to aid clients in the areas of polymer chemistry and engineering. He retired June 30, 2005, from DuPont Research and Technology in Wilmington, DE, as a Research Fellow. At DuPont he led a large Team in the development of isosorbide, an intermediate from renewable resources, and polymers based on isosorbide.

Prior to joining DuPont in 1999, Dr. Charbonneau was employed by Hoechst Celanese Research in Summit, NJ, from 1977 to 1998. He led Teams in the discovery and development of liquid crystal polymers, developed specifications for polymer grade intermediates, scaled-up polymerizations to multi-hundred pound semi-works reactors, coordinated toxicology testing of monomers and polymers, and prepared pre-manufacturing notification (PMN) documents for submission to the Environmental Protection Agency. Several of these polymers are commercialized as VectraŽ engineering resins, and VectranŽ film and fiber. In addition he led Teams in the discovery and development of multifunctional macromolecules ("smart polymers") and the scale-up of polymers with non-linear optical properties. He was the recipient of the Lee Starr Award, Hoechst Celanese's highest award for technical excellence, for his contributions to the development of the liquid crystal polymers business.

Dr. Charbonneau was a member of the General Motors Corporate Research (GMR) Polymers Department from 1972 until 1977. At GMR he developed and patented "alkylene linked polyimides" as candidates for interior automotive applications where increased fire resistance was needed.
  Awards and Professional Organizations:
Dr. Charbonneau was awarded membership in the honorary societies, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi. He has been active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) where he served as Chair of the North Jersey Section Lackawanna subsection, Chair of the Baekeland Award Committee, North Jersey Section Counselor, and Chair of the Polymeric Sciences: Engineering and Science (PMSE) Division of the ACS.
